Microsoft renames Bing Chat to Copilot as it competes with ChatGPT

Microsoft has recently made a significant change in its AI-powered chatbot offering, renaming Bing Chat to Copilot. This move comes as Microsoft seeks to compete with ChatGPT and affirm its position in the AI market. At the recent Microsoft Ignite 2023 event, the company announced the rebranding of Bing Chat to Copilot. The premium version for enterprises, previously known as Bing Chat Enterprise, has also been rebranded to Copilot. According to Microsoft, the name change reflects their vision to create a unified Copilot experience for both consumer and commercial customers. This rebranding effort is not solely focused on avoiding confusion among multiple products with the Copilot brand. It also indicates that Bing Chat may not have performed as expected and that Microsoft wants to dissociate it from the search engine that launched it. A report from StatCounter revealed that Bing failed to gain any market share from Google six months after the launch of Bing Chat, although Microsoft disputed these findings.Copilot will not only have a new name but will also bring additional benefits to users. Starting from December 1, users who sign into Bing with a corporate account will receive the benefit of commercial data protection when using Copilot. This means that their data won’t be saved or used to train AI models, providing enhanced privacy and security. Microsoft plans to expand eligibility for commercial data protection to more Entra ID users over time.Copilot will be available in Windows, Bing, and Microsoft 365 subscription plans at no additional cost. For customers who are not part of these plans, Copilot will be available as a separate subscription for $5 per month.By rebranding Bing Chat to Copilot, Microsoft aims to position itself as a dominant competitor to ChatGPT and provide a comprehensive chat interface across its platforms. The company’s efforts to enhance its AI-powered chatbot offering reflect the growing importance of generative AI in the tech market. With the launch of Copilot, Microsoft seeks to enhance the chat experience for both consumers and businesses, while also differentiating itself from competitors in the AI space.Overall, the rebranding of Bing Chat to Copilot represents a strategic move by Microsoft to strengthen its AI capabilities and establish itself as a leader in the chatbot market.
